SolarCalc is a solar calculator that helps you size your solar and battery system and select the best smart tariff to make the most of your investment. Don’t let salesmen pull the wool over your eyes with exagerrated savings and system designs that are not thought through.
Use the software to:
- Test different solar panel and battery combinations
- Evaluate different quotations by comparing annual electricity bill savings and calculated time to payback
- Understand the sensitivity of savings to assumptions such as future electricity price rises
All you need to start using SolarCalc is:
- Your annual electricity use in kilowatt hours (kwh) which can be found on your electricity bill
- Details of your current electricity tariff (pence per kilowatt hour and standing charge), again on your electricity bill
- A proposed number of solar panels and their power rating plus the amount of battery storage and corresponding cost, either from a quotation or an advertisement

Key inputs to SolarCalc using built in tariffs
SolarCalc contains a number of built in data sets, including sample tariffs, seasonal and hourly usage profiles and more. Simply select from the options or edit them to tailor the calculator more closely to your own profile
Table of summary outputs including annual and lifetime savings plus pay back period – i.e. how quickly you get your money back! The chart shows electricity consumption by rate and amount exported to the grid.
Hardware & software requirements
SolarCalc is written in Microsoft Excel and designed to run on a computer running Microsoft Windows. There are no macros or visual basic used.
A copy of Microsoft Excel for Office 365 (not included!) is required to run the software.
Personal Licence Fees
Licences are for personal use for your own domestic solar system evaluation. Licences are valid for one year from date of delivery after which they can be renewed. They are provided subject to PL Insights Limited’s standard terms and conditions.
Delivery is by email to your requested email address.
