ErlangCalc is an Erlang Calculator in Excel developed without macros or visual basic. It can be used to calculate the resources needed to service demand over a 24-hour 7-day week, and rest resource plans.
Using the software to calculate resource requirements is straight forward:
- Enter demand by hour of week and optionally a 52-week seasonality profile
- Specify Average Handling Times, also variable by hour of week
- Enter your desired service level, abandonment rate and maximum occupancy
- The software produces an hourly profile of required resource levels

The green line shows planned resource hour by hour and the orange line the resource required to achieve performance goals. The difference corresponds to the orange bars in the other chart on this page
Two licence options are available for ErlangCalc:
- Personal Licence – for use by the named user only
- Site licence – for use by multiple users based at the named site
Licences are valid for one year from date of delivery after which they can be renewed. They are provided subject to PL Insights Limited’s standard terms and conditions.
The designated user, organisation / site will be finalised with you prior to shipment in order to generate a unique licence code. Delivery is by email to your requested email address
To discuss your licencing requirements, contact us via phone or email via the contact number at the top of this website.

Blue line shows service level by hour of week (left axis) and the orange bars show resource shortfall / surplus (right axis)
You can also use the software to test different resource plans, in which case ErlangCalc will predict service levels, abandonment rates and occupancy levels for the week as a whole and hour by hour. A comparison with required resource levels will enable you to focus on what resource gaps you need to close.
Further levels of detail include modelling of separate wrap times, in-shift losses (shrinkage) and team-based activities. A scenario manager enables you to store results for later comparison and examine different demand levels through the year.
