PL Insights has released the Sim-Cricket board game. Yes – a board game not a computer game!! You may wish to use a scoring app to keep score, but it you really want an authentic non-tech experience, buy a score book!
When I was young, my Dad (whose cousin was the test cricketer Peter Loader) created a cricket board game for us to play which I now know was a home made version of the Stumpz cricket game which he must have played as a child himself.
Having spent my career simulating business processes, I thought I’d use my knowledge, along with many days as a youth spent watching Essex play cricket, to create a cricket board game myself. The result is the Sim-Cricket board game, inspired by Stumpz but using dice and adding complexity to better represent the nuances of the real game of cricket.
Sim-Cricket’s key differentiator compared to other established cricket board games is that as the bowling side you get to set a field and as the batting side you select a shot in response to the ball bowled. This means that you get the satisfaction of making a change and seeing a catch taken, or alternatively piercing the field with a slightly risky shot.
If you like the way in which a 3/4/5 day game ebbs and flows over time, this might be the game for you. It was certainly fun replaying the first test of the 2005 Ashes series – see the result on the Sim-Cricket Facebook page. You can also see videos of match reports on the Sim-Cricket YouTube channel to give you a flavour of games played with Sim-Cricket during my testing.
